It would be nice to have high-quality images and small-size for our hard drive, right? We could share them on social networks, and professional photographers or anyone who has to do with images for work could manage them simpler on their computers.
Well, Google managed to do exactly this: thanks to a new algorithm, a JPEG can reduce its size in bytes by a stunning 35%, while maintaining a high-quality resolution. This means that for the same size, using this Guetzli codec on an image you will have less of a loss, and therefore with greater quality. As you can see from the opening image, Guetzli manages to retain more information (see right) without increasing the size.
Guetzli uses a model called Butteraugli and chooses what information to keep and which to discard, based on a process that simulates the human eye. Guetzli is freely available for download on Github, and according to Google, it is already compatible with existing browsers and devices.
