GanttProject is a free and open source Java-based project management software featuring Gantt chart, resource management, calendaring, import/export (MS Project, PDF, spreadsheets, HTML). To be precise, the software it’s a project scheduling application. It runs on Windows, Linux and OS X.
The feature set is limited and definite, but reasonable for basic management needs. Maybe GanttProject is not the best choice for novice users, but create a new project is simple. After creating it, you can set its priority, duration, a web link, resources, etc. Menu and dialog boxes are straightforward to navigate although the user interface is sometimes a little unresponsive.
Importing and exporting projects in Microsoft Project and CSV formats is easy. In GanttProject you can profit from Gantt charts, through which you can keep an eye on how your tasks are organised, define milestones and create PERT chart. As many others competitors, the software lets you assign human resources to work on each task, recording their role and how much time they’re working on it. It’s possible to use separate resources chart to know who’s too busy and who is not working.
If you need to generate PDF or HTML reports on your activity, you can do it in minutes. Sharing projects with coworkers is possible thanks to the WebDAV support. GanttProject lacks reporting, budgeting, collaboration and hourly rates features.
Customer support is available through forums. GanttProject is free forever.
Conclusion
GanttProject lacks many features, but it’s a capable tool and it could fit your needs for many project management tasks.
